The Web2.0 Suicide Machine lets you effectively delete all your energy sucking social-networking profiles, kill your fake virtual friends, and completely do away with your web2.0 alterego. The machine is developed in the moddr_lab at WORM (Rotterdam), and serves as a metaphor for the http://suicidemachine.org website which moddr_ hosts; the belly of the beast where the web2.0 suicide-scripts are maintained…

Our services currently run with Facebook.com, Myspace.com and LinkedIn.com; simply enter your username and password for the required service, and our machine will systematically login to your account, change your profile picture, and then one by one delete all of your friends.

For more specific information on the Web2.0 Suicide Machine please have a look at the videtour and FAQ on http://suicidemachine.org

Gamuza is an open source tool based on OpenFrameworks, designed for prototyping and development of interactive installations using contemporary video tracking techniques.

Making code and coding easier, Gamuza can be used like a standalone application or a platform of code to start from. Processing and PureData clients communicate with Gamuza through OSC protocol, offering different approaches and working strategies.

We’ll introduce basic concepts around CV techniques and spatial needs, moving around some artistic references, a short tutorial of the Gamuza graphical interface and some examples showing different kinds of project structures that can be built with the tool.

From this we can discuss specific project proposals that participants may have, setup a working environment on your own machines (bring yr laptop!), and exchange knowledge and ideas around these topics.

this FOO_bar we will focus on our digital footprints in more-or-less analog soil, with a presentation of the Network Insecurity workshop by Danja Vasiliev and Julian Oliver, the final (or is it still beta?) release of our Web_2.0_SuicideMachine with Gordan Savicic, a live/compact workshop for generating VGA signals on a PIC-chip with Arjan Scherpenisse (bring yr own lo-res img’s!) and we will have a look at the Gamuza project with developer Emanuele Mazza, who will discuss the ins&outs surrounding this open-source Computer Vision application.

Furthermore a presentation by Julian Oliver on his recent work and finally a performance by Bluegrass Techno band MICRO-PHOBIC from San Antonio, Texas…

VGA-TESTER WORKSHOP
By using the very simple and cheap PIC Microchip micro-controller it’s possible to generate signals. With these signals you can display all kinds of pixel patterns on any VGA monitor or beamer. During the workshop participants will create their own “VGA test box” that will make it possible for you to do the same.

To sign up for this mini-workshop by Arjan Scherpenisse send an email to workshop@moddr.net

NETWORK[IN]SECURITY PRESENTATIE
presentation of results and occurrences from this workshop by Danja Vasiliev and Julian Oliver.

Borrowing tools and techiques from the field of network (in)security, Danja and Julian will expose the otherwise invisible layer of Wifi activity as a rich space for activism, performance, paranoia and audiovisual practice.

WEB_2.0_SUICIDEMACHINE RELEASE!
Screw your newbie friends with a collective Web2.0 suicide! We have conjured up a machine that lets you delete all your energy sucking social-networking profiles, kill your fake virtual friends, and completely do away with your Web2.0 alterego. "Introduction to Ardour" FLOSS Manual now online

http://en.flossmanuals.net/ardour/

Ardour is a full-featured, free and open-source hard disk recorder and
digital audio workstation program suitable for professional use. It
features unlimited audio tracks and buses, non-destructive, non-linear
editing with unlimited undo, and anything-to-anywhere signal routing. It
supports standard file formats, such as BWF, WAV, WAV64, AIFF and CAF,
and it can use LADSPA, LV2, VST and AudioUnit plugin formats.

The "Introduction to Ardour" FLOSS Manual is a free (gratis/libre)
tutorial-style book, which introduces the program without expecting a
vast knowledge of computers or sound editing from the reader. This FLOSS
Manual was largely written by workshop participants learning the
software themselves, over a one week period during a session led by
Derek Holzer at the moddr_lab/WORM in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

This FLOSS Manual can be read online at:
http://en.flossmanuals.net/ardour/

Non-profit, print-on-demand paper copies can be ordered from Lulu.com
soon. Please check back with the main FLOSS Manuals page in several days
for ordering information:
http://en.flossmanuals.net/

The manual is free to use, distribute and remix according to the GNU
General Public License. FLOSS Manuals volunteers are currently working
on French and Portuguese translations, and anyone is free to add
contributions and edits for future versions of the manual at
http://en.flossmanuals.net/bin/view/Ardour/WebHome

Thanks to Adam Hyde, Walter Langelaar, the workshop participants in
Rotterdam as well as those who helped online from the FLOSS Manuals,
Ardour and Linux Audio communities, and to all the folks at the
moddr_lab and WORM!

By using the very simple and cheap PIC Microchip micro-controller it’s possible to generate signals. With these signals you can display all kinds of pixel patterns on any VGA monitor or beamer. During the workshop participants will create their own “VGA test box” that will make it possible for you to do the same.

How?

The micro-controller will be programmed using the PIC assembly language. However, no assembly coding skills are required, as pre-programmed chips will be available, and participants can create and upload their own image / logo for their test box. Participants do need some soldering skills. The more adventurous participants can use the prepared micro-controller to hook it up to an Arduino or I2C chip, so that the VGA signal can be modified using a more powerful computer. (If you want to do this, please bring your own Arduino or I2C chip)!

ARJAN SCHERPENISSE

As a programmer and tinkerer, Arjan Scherpenisse’s work is about the exploration of
a new universe. Diving head-first into new technologies and unexplored media, he
works on the boundary between the physical and the virtual. New opportunities are
being measured and estimated, profoundly researching every possibility. Algorithms
are stumbled upon, datastructures are crashed into, concepts are wrestled with. In such
confrontations innovation meets emotion.

The increasing dependence on wireless communication appears at odds with notions of public space: while the air we breathe is considered public, the signals passing through it are often not.

Borrowing tools and techniques from the field of network (in)security, Danja and Julian will expose the otherwise invisible layer of WiFi activity as a rich space for activism, performance, paranoia and audiovisual practice.

Over the course of the workshop participants will prototype ideas using a software toolkit given to participants. In parallel we welcome a lively discussion around the ethical and political implications of this area of study more generally.

This course is open to anyone with a healthy dose of curiosity, creativity and paranoia.

Topics covered include:

Network packet capture, analysis, creation and manipulation.

HTML page reconstruction from network packets: what websites are people around me viewing?

Spoofing remote browser sessions: how can I change the text and images in other peoples browsers?

Intercepting chat sessions: how can I change what people say to each other?

Image and streaming media reconstruction from network packets: what video and audio are people around me downloading?

Traffic shaping/routing: changing the shape of the network in your favour.

A creative introduction to the GNU/Linux command line.

Network security crash course.

The Network (In)security course is open to anyone with a healthy dose of curiosity, creativity and paranoia. No prior technical experience is required.

an evening showcasing new tools for artists, on the programme:

The Tagtool crew (AU) presents “Die haarsträubenden Irrfahrten des Hilti”, which can be roughly translated as “Hilti’s Oddyssey of Oddities”, and features the fearsome space mechanic Hilti who travels the universe together with, and inside, the careless spaceship known as Captain, on his way to the mythical Planet Huntopia, home of Commissioner Hun. The world’s first improvised animated live science fiction series.
Much of the performance revolves around the use of the ‘TagTool’, a performative visual instrument used on stage and on the street. It serves as a VJ tool, a creative video game, or an intuitive way of creating animation. The system is operated collaboratively by an artist drawing the pictures and an animator adding movement to the artwork with a gamepad. On the 21st and 22nd of November the crew will lead a DIY TagTool workshop at moddr_lab.

SYNCHRONATOR is a video and audio research project by Gert-Jan Prins and Bas van Koolwijk in an attempt to use a combination of current digital and analogue means in order to make more use of the characteristic visual qualities of such techniques.
Since the early years of video art, works have been made which do not actually produce a standard TV signal waveform and therefore cannot be directly recorded. Some are based primarily upon magnetic distortion of the normal TV scan pattern, others utilise a Cathode Ray Tube as if it were an oscilloscope screen. Bas and Gert-Jan will expand on this history in an introductory presentation, leading up to an audiovisual performance using their newly released SYNCHRONATOR device.

HOTGLUE is the new project by Danja Vasiliev of our moddr_lab. It is a website to build websites. Super easy. Pure creativity will prevail again. It’s as easy as making a collage, no technical skills are required. This night you’ll get a glimpse of HOTGLUE Content Manipulation System and a chat from developer Danja Vasiliev if the internet at the Piksel Festival (NO) is okay ;)
Also there will be an introduction of the upcoming workshop on the 28th and 29th of November. For more info check the WORMagenda…

Streaming in live from Berlin, Adam Hyde will speak about the methodology FLOSS Manuals is pioneering to write a book in 2-5 days. These events are known as ‘Book Sprints’. Adam will talk about this process, and the forthcoming collaborative authoring and Book Sprint platform ‘Booki’ which is being developed by FLOSS Manuals. Adam is the Founder of FLOSS Manuals, a community whose central purpose is to write free manuals about free software. FLOSS Manuals has been operating on an entirely voluntary basis since 2007, and there are now over 1500 sign up contributors. FLOSS Manuals won the 2008 Open Source awards and was recently awarded a Honorary Mention at Ars Electronica, 2009.
Adam’s talk is also an introduction to the Ardour workshop + FLOSS Manuals booksprint which takes place at moddr_lab from Monday 23rd till Friday 27th of November.

In and around the bar area we will have a live-set by Logosamphia (Iran/NL) and an audio-visual installation by artist Jade Boyd ((AU/NO).

Ardour is a full-featured, free and open-source hard disk recorder and digital audio workstation software suitable for professional use. New and experienced users of Ardour are invited to “learn by documenting” during this combination workshop and book sprint.

A book sprint brings together a group of writers, editors and artists to go from an outline to a published book in just five days. We will use this format to give workshop participants tasks which they will learn to complete in Ardour, and which they will then document for the Ardour FLOSS Manual. This is an exciting opportunity both to acquire new skills
as well as share them with others in the form of a book!

The workshop will be split into two sessions: an evening session focusing on learning the software and creating chapters for the FLOSS Manual, and an afternoon session focusing on editing, proofreading and correcting the workshop texts. At the end of the week, we hope to have a beginner’s manual covering these and other topics:

CheatSheet available http://www.moddr.net/wp-content/datacarving_cheatsheet.png!

During the workshop we will explore the contents of found hard-disks (hard-disque trouvé). Using methods borrowed from computer digital forensics participants will peek into the lives of others - former owners of scavenged hardware. Hard-disks as the most intimate part of any computer system. In case of a personal computer - the most intimate part of person’s life. Deductively, we will try to discuss and recreate ‘psyche’ portraits of those strangers and restore the time-lines that otherwise would have faded away. In the times of paranoiac privacy awareness we forget that online is not the only place to loose your identity. Although more and more personal data is stored on the Internet servers it is still written to hard-disks. There were several reports about Internet server’s hard-disks ending up on flea-markets, being sold for little money.

http://www.eworldwire.com/pressreleases/16402
http://redtape.msnbc.com/2006/06/one_year_ago_ha.html
http://mareichelt.de/pub/notmine/sanitizing.html

By the end of the workshop all the hard-disks and/or the data will be destroyed!

Workshop prerequisites:

All participants are asked to go local flea-markets or second-hand shops to pick up few old hard-disks. You may try eBay as well. Older = better, those disks don’t need to be of large capacity, in fact 8-16 Gigabytes is the best size to be able to analyze it during one-day session. They also don’t need to have any operating system. Make sure the disks are 3.5” and have standard IDE interface, this is how it might look like:

Everybody is also expected to bring laptops (PC, Intel Macs) capable of booting from USB-sticks or CDs and equipped with USB2.0 interfaces. GNU/Linux command line knowledge will be advantageous, however it is not required.

Workshop is lead by moddr_ - Danja Vasiliev and Gordan Savicic, experimentalists and interventionists on the edge of digital life and everyday technology. http://moddr.net

Fee: 10 euros (all materials and food!)

Please email m@1010.co.uk to reserve a place (strictly limited)
