CLASS 01
"What abstract poetry tried to achieve is achieved in a similar fashion, though more consistently, by Dadaistic painters, who played off actual real objects by nailing them or gluing them next to each other in a painting. Concepts can be played off against each other much more clearly than when their meanings have been translated into words." - Kurt Schwitters
Our first lesson we introduced ourselves, talked about particular software for digital imaging and discussed different artists approach to collage. We also discussed digital media and touched on topics such as; artists and Intellectual property, and a more contemporary approaches such as Creative Commons whose licenses provide a flexible range of protections and freedoms for authors, artists, and educators. These topics were brought up in regard to my encouragement for the course participants to have online process journals such as Blogger.
In particular we looked that the series 'Bringing the war home' by New York artist Martha Rosler
CLASS 02 we will show each other our *manual collages*, the first part of the collage assignment, where we had the first part of the excersise of making a collage in relation to a particular conviction.
When I say conviction, I mean you can choose - from any of these terms that Conviction may refer to:
A conviction is a strongly held belief that is arrived at after
considering personal experiences and any external inputs that may have
been encountered.
Conviction is a subjective perception, feeling, or suspicion regarding
the validity of a concept or hypothesis.
This particular definition is from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conviction_(disambiguation)
CLASS 2
First we shared and discussed peoples *manual collages* - a great variety of topics manifested in 2 days time!
Then we dived into the *deep end of digital media* by making online process journals for our course. This included - setting up email accounts, creating a Blog, customising it to our tastes. And some uploaded via scan or digital picture an image of our manual collage - so for most it now exists in digital.
Class 3 we will move the manual collage on in the form of digital, and learn how to manipulate it with software [photoshop /gimp] in regard to image size, tone and colour manipulation - keeping in mind the concept of the work initially.
part 1#
We will go over the *finer details* of how to:
import images, photoshop basics, [image size, tone and colour manipulation],
online blogging tips, how to get help to help yourself via online manuals, troubleshooting, managing files, files sizes - protocols for printing or web publishing.
Then we can start to develop our digital collages further with software and understand the choices we make conceptually in this creation.
